What is Aider
Aider is an open-source AI pair-programming tool that runs in a terminal, edits a local Git repository and can connect to models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, DeepSeek, OpenRouter and other compatible providers.
Pricing
As of August 1, 2026, Aider does not publish a paid Aider subscription, hosted seat plan or software usage fee. The application is distributed as open-source software under the Apache 2.0 licence, so the Aider software itself can be installed without a licence charge.
Users bring an API key from a model provider and pay that provider's current inference charges. A ChatGPT subscription is separate from OpenAI API billing. Aider can also connect to local models, in which case the user supplies the required hardware and operating costs.
Included capabilities
The free software includes repository-aware chat, code editing, Git integration, multiple chat modes, configurable model providers, a repository map, voice and browser options, and IDE use through a terminal or file-watching workflow. Optional third-party model, hosting and voice services retain their own prices.
