What is NotebookLM

NotebookLM is Google’s source-grounded research and learning workspace. Users add documents, websites, audio, and other sources, then chat with that material or generate outputs such as Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, reports, study aids, and mind maps.

Core offerings

  • Source-grounded chat and research using uploaded or linked material.
  • Audio and Video Overviews, reports, flashcards, quizzes, mind maps, and Deep Research.
  • Consumer upgrades through Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra.
  • Enterprise access through Google Cloud and qualifying Workspace editions.

Pricing

As of July 25, 2026, NotebookLM Standard is free with a Gmail account. Google’s US plan page lists Google AI Plus at US$9.99 per month and Google AI Pro at US$19.99 per month. Google also announced Google AI Ultra tiers starting at US$100 per month, while regional availability and pricing can differ.

Standard supports 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, 50 chats per day, three Audio and three Video Overviews per day, ten daily reports, flashcards, quizzes and mind maps, and ten Deep Research uses per month. Plus raises those headline limits to 200 notebooks, 100 sources, 200 daily chats, six daily Audio and Video Overviews, 20 daily study artifacts, and three Deep Research uses per day.

Pro provides 500 notebooks, 300 sources, 500 daily chats, 20 daily Audio and Video Overviews, 100 daily reports and study artifacts, and 20 Deep Research uses per day. Ultra increases capacity again: Google’s current help table distinguishes 20TB and 30TB Ultra access, with up to 500 notebooks, 500 or 600 sources per notebook, 2,500 or 5,000 daily chats, and substantially higher artifact and research limits.

Model footprint

NotebookLM is powered by Gemini models, but Google sells it through plan-level access and quotas rather than per-token model pricing. The paid tiers also add higher model access, priority access to major features, and advanced sharing for paid users.

Why select NotebookLM

NotebookLM is particularly useful for research, education, and knowledge work where answers must stay connected to supplied sources. The free tier is substantial, while Plus, Pro, and Ultra mainly buy higher research and generation capacity.
